A Message From The Principal

As we move into October, our school year is taking shape as a true learning community. In our younger grades, I’ve been sharing Bucket Filler stories to help students see the power of kindness and how our actions build a positive classroom. In grades 3–5, I read Your Fantastic Elastic Brain to show students how their brains grow and stretch as they learn new things. Over the coming weeks, I’ll also be visiting classrooms to talk with students about their beginning-of-the-year iReady data. These conversations help each child understand where they are starting and what learning steps will help them grow throughout the year. Together, we are building a strong foundation for success and celebrating the fact that every brain is capable of learning and improving.

As we continue growing together, I encourage families to talk with their children about what they’re learning and to celebrate the effort it takes to grow their brains. Ask questions like, “What new skill are you working on?” or “How did you stretch your brain today?” These conversations help students see that learning is a journey, and that mistakes and challenges are all part of getting smarter. Thank you for partnering with us to build a school community where every child knows they can learn, grow, and shine.

We appreciate your continued support!

Kindergarten Celebrates Successful First Family Night

Recently, Kindergarten hosted their very first Family Night! We enjoyed a picnic on the grass, and many children had a blast playing together on the playground. Some students even showed Ms. Rodgers and Ms. Weise how to do a cartwheel, and they definitely "stuck the landing!" A big thank you to everyone who came out for a fun-filled evening!

Ms. Mullen's Kindergarteners Have Been Busy

Students had a blast learning how to use watercolor paint. They created "scribble art" by drawing on white paper with a white crayon and then painting over it. When they added the paint, the secret lines magically appeared!

The children's reactions were priceless, and it was so much fun to watch them explore their creativity!

2nd Graders and High School Students Connect Through Weekly Visits

Mrs. Daubner's BHS Education for Parenting class will be visiting Mrs. Goettl's 2nd graders every week! Recently, the two groups had their first meetup, and it was amazing!

All the students—both high school and 2nd graders—had a blast getting to know each other. They read books, played cards, put together puzzles, and enjoyed great conversations.

This experience will give the high school students valuable real-life interactions with younger kids, making learning fun for everyone!

Sensational Adventures in Kindergarten

All three Kindergarten classes recently dove into the exciting world of their 5 senses! They engaged in a variety of fun activities, including crafting their names in Braille, embarking on a delicious taste test, popping popcorn, taking a texture walk, and creating their very own Mr. Potato Heads themed around the 5 senses! The students had an absolute blast exploring and learning together!

Off to Little Farmer!

1st grade classes had an exciting trip to Little Farmer! We started our day playing on the playground, followed by a delicious lunch. After that, the students enjoyed a fun tour where they discovered how pollination works and learned all about bees. They explored the life cycles of apple trees, picked a fresh apple, and tasted it!

They even got to see how apples are washed and sorted after being harvested. To top it all off, the students went on a hayride and picked their very own pumpkins!

The weather was absolutely perfect, and we had many amazing adults helping out throughout the day! It was a fantastic experience for everyone!

As the chilly winter months arrive, we’re excited to keep our outdoor recess fun going! We’ll continue to enjoy the fresh air unless the "feels like" temperature drops below 5°.

However, since mornings can be a bit brisk, we will pause morning recess when temperatures dip to those levels. Once things warm up a bit and stabilize, we’ll be back outside enjoying our playtime!

It is hard to believe that we are already one month into the new school year and Homecoming festivities are less than a week away. New this year, you will occasionally notice a little section in this school newsletter with a message from the Board of Education of BASD. These communications are part of our board goals for this school year, where we are focusing on communication to all our district’s stakeholders. We hope to keep you as parents updated on recent items from the Board level as well as ask the occasional question to help us gather feedback.

In September, all board committees met, and the monthly board meeting was held on September 24th. Items on the agendas included feedback from new staff members, a K-12 curriculum review cycle, the addition of the district’s capital improvement plan to the website, budget forecasts for this school year and the next several, and the process required if the district were to sell two of its properties. The district’s continuous improvement plan for the 2025-2026 school year, which includes goals for all schools, certain departments and teams, and the board, was also presented at the monthly meeting. Lastly, we approved changes to the superintendent’s contract and formally approved a document detailing the superintendent evaluation process used by the board each year.

As stated above, this new little section is a part of the board’s goals for this school year. In addition to this, the board is also developing a new quarterly electronic newsletter directed to all residents of BASD. This new newsletter will allow us to go more in-depth on many board level topics as well as keep all interested residents more aware of the district’s happenings. We are in the beginning stages of this project, but please be on the lookout for more information and sign-up opportunities to receive the new newsletter in the weeks ahead.
