A Message From the Principal
A Message From the Principal
Greetings BMS Families,
It’s hard to believe we have only two months left of the school year! The Forward Exam testing began strong with our students before spring break, and we are incredibly proud of the hard work from both our students and staff. Track and field season is starting, and we are looking forward to a successful season with a large team.
As we enter these final eight weeks of school, one of our key focuses is ensuring that students are present and engaged in their classes. Every school day is vital, and missing classes can have significant consequences, particularly for middle schoolers during the latter half of the year. Here’s why attendance is crucial:
Every class contains essential material. Regular attendance helps students stay on track with the curriculum and the pace of learning.
When students are in class, they can easily seek support from teachers and ask questions.
As the year progresses, many teachers concentrate on mastering the learning standards, which often increases both the rigor and pace of instruction.
With the faster pace and increased assignments, students may find it challenging to keep up. More time out of class means more schoolwork can accumulate, leading to feelings of overwhelm.
To support your child's learning, we encourage you to prioritize attendance. Here are some important reminders:
Emphasize the importance of arriving on time for every class, prepared and ready to participate.
Accept no excuses for missing school except for genuine illness or emergencies. Skipping class to complete an assignment is not a valid reason.
Avoid scheduling appointments or activities for your child that would cause them to miss class.
We appreciate your partnership in supporting our students at Berlin Middle School. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out!
Kind Regards,
Colleen Pariso
Principal
Berlin Middle School

Wisconsin Forward Exam
Berlin Middle School students will be participating in the Wisconsin Forward Exam during the spring testing window. State exams are required by both State (Wis. Stat. § 118.30) and Federal ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) Law. Our school is scheduled to take the Wisconsin Forward Exam from Monday, March 17 - Friday, April 25.
The exam measures knowledge and skills all students should have for their grade-level in the area(s) of language arts and math; as well as 8th graders in science and social studies. One or more subtests may be administered daily during our selected time frame. Students not in school on testing days will be scheduled for a make-up test prior to the close of the testing window.
Attached is an Information for Families (English and Spanish) brochure that gives more information. Students’ performance on the assessment will not affect their grades, however, please encourage your child to do the best they can. The results of these tests will be used to help school staff make determinations regarding curriculum, placement, and services to best support students.
Please make sure your child has their chromebooks charged each night. If students have ear buds/headphones that plug into the computer, they can use those. Otherwise, earbuds/headphones will be provided – students are not allowed to use wireless earbuds for state testing. Cell phones and/or smart watches are not allowed in the testing room. Students should leave these at home or can leave them in their lockers during testing.
Additionally, we want all students to do their very best on this exam with your support. Eating a nutritious breakfast and getting a good night sleep will help your child focus and give their best effort of the test. We appreciate your support and efforts with this.
If you have any questions, please contact Principal Colleen Pariso.

Microbit Technology Project
At BMS, students in the Coding class had an exciting project where they turned Microbits into working pedometers. This hands-on experience helped them learn coding while positively impacting our school!
The project started with students learning to program Microbit devices to count their steps. Each student wrote code to track daily steps, collaborating during coding sessions with teacher support. After programming, students organized a school cleanup, using their Microbits to collect litter while monitoring their step counts. This activity encouraged physical activity and environmental responsibility.
As they walked, students experienced a sense of accomplishment as their step counts rose. The project concluded with a discussion on the importance of coding and environmental care, where students shared experiences and reflected on their contributions.
