A Message From The Principal

Greetings BHS Families,

Summer is just around the corner! As students and staff look forward to a refreshing break, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to engage in activities that often get overlooked during the school year. Here are some suggestions for your teen this summer:

Get or Stay Active
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and get moving. This could involve joining an organized sport (many youth and adult leagues are available in our area) or engaging in recreational activities like biking, skateboarding, or swimming. Consider joining your child for a walk to chat about the week—it's beneficial for the mind, body, and soul.

Read for Fun
During the school year, reading is often dictated by class requirements. Summer offers a chance for pleasure reading, which doesn’t have to be limited to books. Magazines and newspapers on topics your child is interested in can provide enjoyable reading material, especially while traveling. How-to books or manuals can inspire teens to try new recipes or tackle projects like fixing an old engine. Encourage your child to 'read' through audio recordings while doing chores or exercising—public libraries offer plenty of digital audio books. Additionally, podcasts are a fantastic alternative, with topics available for free across most audio apps.

Work or Provide a Service
Many teens take on summer jobs, which are valuable experiences that teach responsibility, communication, and personal finance skills. If your child doesn't have a job, consider getting involved with a service organization for volunteer opportunities, even if just a few times over the summer. The rewarding feeling of helping others and contributing to the community is a vital lesson.

Travel
Take time to explore the world, even if it's just a local day trip. Visit a new restaurant to try different foods, discover one of our beautiful state parks, or enjoy a local festival or farmers market. Summer is an excellent season for exploration, with many affordable options to choose from.

Start (and Finish) a Project
With the extra time summer brings, it’s an ideal time to start a new project, whether it’s gardening, building something, or cleaning out a closet. The satisfaction of completing a task is rewarding and energizing. These projects also provide a great opportunity to bond with your teen, so get involved and enjoy this time together. It’s precious, and you won’t get it back.

Whatever you choose to do this summer, view each day as a chance to learn something new and to strengthen your relationship with your child. You won’t regret it.

On a final note, please check the important dates and events happening in May listed elsewhere in this newsletter. We hope to seeing you at some of our upcoming events!

Yours,
Bryant

The hallways of BHS have recently been filled with delightful aromas, especially from the homemade stromboli!

The Practical Living students just completed their Table Manners Unit. This week, they showcased their skills by preparing meals that included all five food groups and practiced their table manners. Their impressive dishes included grilled chicken salad with fruit and yogurt parfaits, chicken and broccoli Alfredo, fruit pizza, strawberry cobbler, and caramelized onion burgers. Their politeness and culinary talents were commendable!

Additionally, students are excited for a field trip on May 6th to MPTC, where they will tour the culinary arts facilities and enjoy a manners meal provided by the Culinary Arts Club.

The Food Service students recently crafted apple swans as part of their garnishing unit. They applied their knife skills and safety techniques to create these delightful swans. Don't they look amazing?

Recently, Mrs. Daubner's class has been exploring how to read labels and identify added sugars in beverages. For instance, if someone drinks two 12-ounce cans of soda each day, they would consume a total of 5.6 gallons in just one month!

To make the lesson more engaging, students converted grams of sugar into teaspoons and used sugar cubes to visually represent the sugar content in various drinks. The results were surprising for the students, making it a fun and informative experience!
