A Message From the Principal Dear BHS Families, I hope 2026 is off to a great start for you. I feel like January flew by, even with the brutal cold. Our second semester is off to a great start. I wanted to share some data with you from the first half of the year:
Bridge Day/Grades: On Monday, January 12th we ran a grade report to determine who was required to attend on Bridge Day. On that report:
139 students had at least one ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade. There were a total of 321 D/F grades. 62 students had at least one ‘F’ grade. That equates to approximately 15% of students at BHS failing at least one course.
A week later, final grades were due and we ran a follow up report: 95 students had at least one ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade. There were a total of 209 D/F grades.
77 of those 95 students only had D’s with no F’s as just 18 students failed a class. That means less than 5% of students at BHS failed a course last semester,
In conclusion, the efforts of our students (and staff) on Bridge Day and the days prior made a significant difference in the number of low grades and failures. This is a result of students completing work that they previously hadn’t, retaking assessments they previously performed low in, and finding alternative ways to demonstrate their learning to a satisfactory level. These grades weren’t ‘given’, they were earned. Attendance:
As of January 29th, 24.2% of our students are chronically absent, meaning that they have missed more than 10% of the school days so far this year. There is a strong correlation between the students who contributed to those low grade numbers above and those that are chronically absent. The data shows that the greatest indicator of success is attending regularly. Ideally, we will improve on our attendance as the year goes on, bringing that data point closer to 20%. We certainly need the support of parents and guardians to make that happen.
Behavior Data: As of January 29th, we have had 138 ‘Major’ violations (level 2-4) of the code of conduct.
84 of those are for ‘disruptive/disrespectful’ behavior. 50 of these 84 were addressed administratively with a lunch detention or other ‘logical consequence/loss of privilege’
7 resulted in an in-school suspension and 6 in an out-of school suspension due to the severity or repetitive nature of the behavior. 34 of the majors are for ‘other violations of school rules’ which are mostly repeated cell phone violations.
The most common administrative response to repetitive cell phone violations includes progressive loss of privilege, in accordance with our cell phone policy.
A celebration to note is that 91.8% of our students have received 0-1 major infractions this year. Anything around 90% is exceptional, meaning the vast majority of our students follow the code of conduct nearly all the time.
We are constantly monitoring our data and determining where areas of strength are as well as areas for improvement. I hope this mid-year snapshot helps you to see the impact of some of the work we are doing at BHS. Thank you, Bryant

Sewing 1 Students Make Pajama Pants
Our Sewing 1 students have been busy creating and learning! They recently completed a fabric letter project, where they practiced using interfacing, batting, and pinking shears. But they didn’t stop there!
Students also followed a traditional Simplicity pattern to machine-sew their very own pair of pajama pants—reading and following the pattern, sewing a waistband, inserting elastic, and finishing hems like pros!
Sewing is definitely not a lost art in this class! We’re so proud of the patience, focus, and skills our students are developing. Keep up the fantastic work, Sewing 1! |

Hoops For Hope
Our Berlin community came together for Hoops for Hope as the Berlin Boys Basketball team took on Wautoma. It was a meaningful and emotional night filled with love and support for two cherished members of our BHS family—Shannon Klawitter, who is bravely battling blood cancer, and Jennifer Leahy, who is courageously fighting breast cancer. Together, over $6,000 was raised for Shannon and Jenny—an incredible show of community support!!
